As a research assistant at the University of Oregon, I’m often asked what rigor is. It’s a phrase that has come from a survey of college students, but what it actually means is that the level of research is high. That’s the level I consider when I am reading a book, watching a documentary, or learning something new. One of the best ways to get to know a topic is to read and learn it.
The problem with rigor is you end up reading everything you ever wanted to read, and then reading more. The problem with rigor, is that the level of rigor you end up getting can be so high that it becomes exhausting. The reason for this is because you read so much, you end up reading about things you don’t know a whole lot about.
I recently read a short article from the Wall Street Journal about a new book about “rigor” in research. The article was about a new book called “The Rigor Capitalist” by Jason Zweig and Eric Ries. It talks about rigor in research. In terms of rigor, they talked about two very different levels of rigor. The first level of rigor is the rigor you get when you are doing a good job.

I think the best way to describe rigor is as a form of “naming.” It’s just like when you name an object, you are naming it. You’re saying, “This is what that means.” In rigor you name things that seem to make sense when you see them. It’s a little like saying, “This is a good thing.
