Salus research, or what we now call “brain training” is a new approach to “mind training” that involves learning to understand how the brain works. The idea is that by learning how the brain works, you learn how to regulate brain function in a way that benefits you. This can also be used to treat neurological disorders, or even to enhance the brain. The salus approach is based on the premise that the brain has certain basic features.

Some people, like myself, are quite certain that there is some kind of fundamental “thing” that makes a person who is a person, a person that can learn, a person that can be trained. One such thing is that we all seem to be born with different genes. While each of us is different genetically, each of us are also quite similar in the way we relate to each other.

This is a good point, but the fact is that most people don’t even have this particular trait, so it’s hardly the defining feature that you’re looking for. Instead, it’s simply a basic, biological, human attribute. The salus approach is based on the idea that it’s possible to enhance the brain’s natural ability to learn and remember by changing a specific gene.

It does require research, but there’s no denying the idea that we can “improve” ourselves if we have the right genes. Because how would we know if we did? Well, we can just ask our parents. We know them best, so if they’re willing to tell us about someone they think we might be able to improve, then we’re in the clear.

Well, that’s the salus hypothesis to the rescue, it would seem. The idea is that genetic modification could be used to produce more of a specific gene within a person to boost their ability to learn and remember. According to the theory, the gene is only produced when the person experiences a sufficient period of stress, such as an accident, or a major life change. There’s no telling whether this would work, so we’ll just have to wait and see.

Salus is a good idea, and could work, but the problem is that there is no way to test or prove that the gene is working with a large population. If you or I could produce the gene we would have a huge problem. People like to believe that they have a magical cure for everything, so this is not a good reason to try to make people smarter.

The point is that if we create a gene that makes people smarter, we could have an easy time of it. But we wont have a genetic cure for anything; we wont even be able to prove that people will be smarter. We need to find an approach that works. We could try to give people some way to test it, but we don’t know what kind of gene is in the test or how it works.
