I will admit that I’ve always had a strong curiosity about the lives and cultures of different people. I would love to get to know the people of Baja, Mexico. I would love to learn more about the people who live on the Pacific coast of Mexico and the people who live in the rural areas of the country.
One way I’ve tried to get to know people is to participate in ethnographic research. The main purpose of ethnographic research is to allow participants to share their experiences with you and get it out of their own system. In our practice, we’ve taken ethnographic research trips to Mexico to see what we can learn about the people involved in our practice.
The purpose of the ethnographic research trips is to allow us to work on our own practices and gain greater insight into the unique culture our clients are used to working in. I don’t know if anyone has asked you, but do you think that the reason that people go to your practice is because they need to escape their own self-consciousness and their own fears? I think so. You’re a therapist. Your job is to help people with their internal world.
To this end, the ethnographic research trips allow each of us to step back and look at our own lives, our own internal world, and our own mental state. We can identify and articulate a few key areas we are working on and see what we can learn from them. These are the things that we can use to help our clients. But just because one of us is taking notes doesn’t mean that one of us is in some way “off”.
This is the part of the research that is the most fun because it is so very real. As a therapist, you are a part of a very small percentage of the people who do the actual research. But I can assure you that the people who research people are quite good at it. They are also pretty good at documenting the data that they collect. And the more data you have, the better you are at making decisions about who to work with.
I have a lot of respect for ethnographic research, but I can’t tell if I’d be a good therapist if I didn’t write down everything that I saw, read, or heard. I’m not a professional therapist, so my writing is as good or better than most of what I do. But it’s true. When I’m writing, I am as much a part of the experience as the person who actually knows the person.
My focus at the moment is to make sure that I can be sure that I am writing about something that might be interesting for others. It’s like when you are writing the next chapter of your life. If you think that your life is about to change, you need to know that you are going to change your life. If you can’t make that happen, then you are probably a bad person to keep.
I think that everyone has this “I am writing something for someone” problem. You know the feeling. The person you are writing for never actually reads your work. They just look at it and hope that it applies to them. But in reality the person you are writing for is the one who gets to read it. Its like when you are in an exam.
The first thing you need to know is that you are very unlikely to be a good person to keep. No one likes to write a bad review because people are always trying to convince you that you suck. But in reality the person who writes bad reviews is probably the one who is the worst.
