Increasingly, higher education places an emphasis on the “cognitive skills” of the student. The student is supposed to be self-aware, self-directed, and self-critical. These cognitive skills are developed through a rigorous and demanding curriculum that includes courses in physics, mathematics, and reading.
A common complaint in this area is that the quality of the education being offered isn’t enough for the students to make it through the class. To support this claim, collins provides two studies of the quality of the education in higher education. The first is a 1993 survey of 1,000 American students in college. This survey found that only one quarter of students at the top 10 schools had taken a college-level course in physics.
Collin’s second study is a 1999 survey of 1,600 American students in college. This survey found that only one in five students at the top 10 schools had taken an advanced-level physics course. So collins concludes that the quality of education is much higher in America than one might think.
This article is actually just another way of saying that the quality of higher education is not the highest. The top 10 schools have the highest quality of education among the top 10 universities. Yet, the middle schools and the low schools have the lowest quality.
The article actually explains why this is. The top 10 schools have the most student population, which means the quality of education is much higher. This is good, because then students can concentrate on their studies instead of trying to impress their teachers. But the middle schools and the low schools have the lowest population, and thus lower quality of education.
When one considers the high school and the low school populations, there is a lot of variance among the schools. Most of the students in these high schools were very good teachers and were well respected by the parents, but when one considers the diversity between these two schools, the quality of education is much higher.

This is good advice. The problem is that the people who run the schools don’t actually want students to learn. For example, in the article about the students in “the very best schools”, the only mention of the teachers is their names, and they don’t seem like they really care about the students. In fact, they seem to be more concerned with getting their school on the internet. This is the reason why there is so much variation in the schools.
The only part of this that stands out the most is the school itself. Every kid is supposed to be going to a school because they’re supposed to be in the school. What is it that they want to do? They want to have a good school. They want to be a part of the school, not a part of the class. Asking for something to be good is pretty difficult.
I think the school is a good way to think about it. Not just the school itself, but the schools and the teachers. Students are supposed to see the teachers as teachers. They are supposed to be able to identify teachers of the same class as them. So they should be able to see them as teachers. But maybe this is more of a cultural thing. Maybe schools are like families. The only people you can be a part of are those who are part of the family.
